Spring Break And Books

Today is the first day of Spring break! Yea, no schedule or alarm clocks for a whole week! Possibly even some fun at Wisconsin Dells is on our horizon. Even though it's "Spring" break it still looks like Winter here. In fact we could get up to four inches of slush and snow tonight - ugh! This weather makes me feel like reading. I love to read to the kids, but since school has started it seems like we don't have much time for it anymore. This week is the perfect week to read a chapter book. Does anyone have any suggestions? We've already read 'Charlotte's Web', 'Stuart Little' and all 'The Little House Books'. Do you think almost six is too young to start the "Harry Potter" books? I'd love to hear any one's suggestions.

I remember enjoying Indian in the Cupboard being read outloud to us - we were in the 5th grade at the time, but I think it would be appropriate for younger ages.

My boys just fininshed The BFG, they loved it. Also James and the Giant Peach is another one they enjoyed. Both by Roald Dahl. Rascal by Sterling North is also good. It's about a boy and his pet raccoon. (I didn't read it to Alex, Randy did). I love to read to the kids too. Whatever you choose - enjoy!

Maybe Ralph S. Mouse, the Mouse and the Motorcycle? My kids love those books. Mice are on my mind right now because I found one in our house today. haha

Oooohh, I loved Indian in the Cupboard too. And all the Roald Dahl. And Judy Blume...although those are more girly books. I think the first Harry Potter book would be fine...but by the 2nd they start to get into the dark stuff, right? I read A Series of Unfortunate Events to Nolan when he was a little baby. I thought they were hilarious.

You know that we only live about 40 minutes from Wisconsin Dells? Except that we won't be around this week. We leave tomorrow night to head up to Aaron & Tammie's for Easter. But if you're ever down this way again, let us know.

all the books I've thought of have already been mentioned. kylie loves to listen to books on tape so we hear a lot of these books that way.

Or maybe Pippy Longstocking... I vaguely remember reading about her when I was little... she might introduce some "ideas" to the kids, though. Ha.

You'd know better, but I'd think Harry Potter would be more entertaining for older kids (well, Micah might dig it).

Some of my favorites to read to kids are the original Winnie the Pooh stories and Shel Silverstein's poems. Pooh seems to work for any age group and I think it has entertaining stuff for adults, too.

A big second on the Roald Dahl stuff. James and the Giant Peach was my favorite book as a kid. I loved it when Mom would read it to us. Of course, she had the original, large hardcover with beautiful color drawings. I think the modern versions have new (and inferior) drawings. Oh, and never, ever watch the movie. The animation is cool, but they ruined the story. Blech.
